Warframe is free to play! There is no reason why you shouldn't try it (unless Australia decides it's too violent -why haven't you guys repealed these censorship laws yet?)

I was thinking about downloading this and then I read the comments below on Metacritic.
It didn't inspire confidence.

From Asynaptic
Dec 9, 2013

I would have given it a "1" for effort but after all the deception and abuse of the customers I just can not. Currently there are 27 pages including 540 postings by extremely angry players of this game on the Warframe forums regarding the ill treatment we have received at the hands of this company.

Free to play? Before you invest your time and money in this potentially wonderful but actually disappointing game please read on.
Welcome to Warframe where you will be asked to invest real money to buy in game platinum currency which is used in a nonrefundable manner to purchase items that improve your otherwise useless "free" weaponry.
Then watch your weaponry (for which you have paid real money) get arbitrarily destroyed by nerfing. While new items are then offered to you in the market for real cash to replace your now useless weapons.
Alternatively you will be asked to grind out 100 missions in a "special Event" for a promised reward weapon.
You do the grind you get a nice weapon that looks worth investing real cash in in order to make it a respectable end game weapon. Then weeks later after spending your real money and without any warning the nice weapon you got gets basically destroyed by a major nerf from the developers and the weapon is simply no longer useful.
This has been a recurring theme for this game for months now and the veteran gamers are extremely unhappy with this business model.
The developers have repeatedly encouraged players to spend real money on an allegedly F2P game to get decent weaponry and then they have repeatedly trashed those weapons to the point of uselessness only to introduce a new weapon for real currency rinse and repeat.

Case in point - A weapon called the Soma offered for sale for real cash and a weapon slot purchased for real money weapon purchased then subsequently the stats significantly change from the purchased weapon stats rendering it far worse and in fact useless in many parts of the game.
Case in point - A weapon called the strunwraith shotgun offered as a reward for time invested in special event which the developers used to test a new game format.
Event done weapon awarded then subsequently "nerfed" to the point of being put back on the shelf. Oh yes this weapon also consumed real cash for a weapon slot and for upgrades to make it truly useful.
Current Case in point - A weapon called the Brakk again an event reward for running over 100 missions! 100 mission! That is a HUGE investment.
And again the Warframe developers arbitrarily ruined the weapon after many people had invested real cash upgrading it too.

The behavior of the game developer here, DE, is at best abusive and indifferent to the gaming community. But it also constitutes engaging in deceptive and unethical business practice.
I would strongly encourage the gaming community to avoid spending any more real cash on this game until a little well deserved respect is shown and this reprehensible bait and switch business practice is terminated .
If you don't believe me then go to the Warframe forums page and read the now 27 pages of 540 postings of extremely angry gamers. It says way more than I ever could.
Avoid this game like the plague.
Thank you

I haven't spent a single dime on a weapon or a warframe (character). Kim and I each have 5 frames and a locker full of weapons.

If you buy your platinum 50% off (or more) then it's not that big of deal -in fact never by platinum unless it's on sale but they are like steam -they put platinum on sale all the time. I've only spent 25 dollars on Warframe. I spent a total of 110 dollars on Guild Wars 2. I don't regret a single dime spent on Warframe.

That "real cash" he's talking about to upgrade a weapon is about 50 cents (sale price) and the weapon slot: less than 2 cents (again sale price).

You don't have to spend money to upgrade though: you just have to be patient because they give out the upgrades in game, but you have to wait for them to "build" after you get one -or you cold rush the build or just buy one for 50 cents.

The weapon BRAKK, was rewarded to me for playing the game. It came with a weapon slot and it was already upgraded. It was great while it lasted and over powered as hell but I'm looking forward to whatever comes next and secretly hoping they realize that shotguns should have spread over distance and not damage drop off over distance. Also -those 100 missions rewarded me significantly for every 5 missions played and I got to chose my reward -some of those rewards were weapon upgrades.

You don't even have to buy platinum: you can trade mods (think skill cards) with other players willing to trade platinum.

Also, some of the weapons he mentions (Soma -kim and I both have one -just got mine because I saw how strong hers was after the latest update) as being useless were never nerfed. They are still powerful as hell -you just have to learn the new damage modding system.

Weapons can be bought for money but none of the serious players do that because the weapons are more fun to earn -and it's not a grind. There are missions that guarantee certain drops. Once you play through two or three "events" (think christmas in guild wars but they occur close to once per month) you can usually just craft a new weapon as soon as it hits the market because they give out crafting materials like candy.

Warframe is the least money grabby game I've ever played. Sounds like the reviewer is getting butt hurt because he doesn't like that the latest update changed it so that his elite weapons are no longer the only powerful weapons in the game and traditionally weaker weapons can now also hold their own (when modded right) in higher level content.

installed it today (because fuck it, it's free) and played through the first 3 missions. seems alright. a bit empty population wise at the lower end. I'll stick with it a bit more. the actual gameplay is decent though. a bit over-twitchy in melee. also the upgrade system is a bit confuzzling. I've earned a few bits and pieces but have no idea what to do with them.

Duk282 is my character in Warframe Foolio.

Beat the first boss -he drops a sword blueprint. You should have enough materials to craft it in the foundry -that should give you a decent idea as to how to build things.

The upgrade process is like this:

Every frame and weapon has 10(?) card slots for upgrades and every level gives you "card points."

You can fill all 10 slots with different card powers (more shields, electric damage, etc), but only if you have enough card points for that card. More powerful cards cost more card points.

Polarities: some card slots will cut the cost of equipping a card in half if the the symbol in the upper right side of the card matches the symbol of card slot it is placed in. (If it doesn't match then the cost to equip it will increase).

You can double your card points by adding a reactor (warframe upgrade) or catalyst (weapon upgrade).

You can also upgrade cards to be more powerful (increase electric damage from 5% to 10%) but it will increase its card point cost. You upgrade cards by fusing them with other cards of the same "polarity"

Card fusion: from the card mod menu select the card you want to upgrade. then select fusion. If you have multiple copies of the same card that should be your first choice for fusion, otherwise just match the card with another of the same polarity. Fusion cards can be fused with any mod card. A bar on the left will fill up showing you how much fusion power you've added to the card. once you fill up the bar, your card's point cost will increase along with it's power and little black bar on the left side of the card will turn white informing you how many times the card has already been fused (some cards can be fused three times -others ten times or more). Confirm the fusion -this will cost in game credits.

Let me know which frame you have -I can suggest a build!

I figured most of it out after a few days, although i didnt realise you could use the multiple card copies to upscale the mods. Soooo many wasted fusion cores.

I've been getting decent daily log in rewards, and loads of credits off of the invasion defense maps. already bought myself a lex pistol for some extra stopping power, got a braton for a login reward, and crafted the sword dropped for the first boss(cronus?).

So weapon wise i'm doing better than i started with. That said, I despise the excalibur frame i picked to start with. stat wise it's alright but the abilities are useless, shouldve gotten a Loki instead. I'm about 5 seconds away from dropping 20 bucks on some platinum and just buying a new frame, because looking at the crafting costs it'll be a while before i can manage it. that said, everything else is pretty easy to get a hold of so it'll probably be the only cash I spend on it. I'm thinking the Nekros looks good.

I do have a couple of questions though. Where do you get orokin cells to drop? I haven't found one yet and it's holding up my crafting. Is the max rank per frame 30? And what do the tower keys that i've gotten actually do?

All that said, I'm loving the game and playing it a LOT. I'm looking forward to being able to craft a vectis as soon as i have the mats for it because from my end of level stats it looks like i'm fairly accurate in comparison to most (though my damage is lacking).

DO NOT BUY FRAMES... unless you do not have time to play the game.

Just work your way through the map -by the time you get all the parts for a frame you want you will usually have the mats to build it. They also do "double resource weekend" on occasion. If you clear your schedule for that weekend -you'll have more mats than you know what to do with.

All rare mats have a chance to drop from bosses. Defeat Sargus Ruk on Saturn a few times and he will give up your Orokin cells.

Excalibur is decent -his blind ability is his most useful skill. Add a fully leveled stretch and focus mod to him and his slash dash becomes quite powerful: one of the cheapest and best AOE abilities in the game. Also, use super jump before you use javelins -they will rain down on their victims.

Max rank is 30, but when you polarize a card slot on a weapon/frame it resets back to 0.

There are certain levels that require keys to be able to access -some have to be bought and crafted from the market. Others are random drops. Keys are not used up unless the mission is a success -form a party beforehand.

Mmmm,

My excaliburs fully levelled (no forma stuff or anything though) and I've built a volt (now lvl27) with all the invasion missions and Cicero reactor stuff, I've added a sentinel (working on a second) and have waaaay too much of every component. Saturn, Jupiter and Mars are pretty great for farming. I'll drop a few bucks on some plat and buy some slots (I'll need them soon) and probably the nekros (there's no way I'll get to derelict missions anytime soon). I'm building a Scindo, My Rhino is 2 days away, Nyx 3 days away, and once I can get a chassis to drop, i'll build an Oberon. And I'm eyeing off a Nova as my last frame. Been farming towers (only tower 1, tried tower 2 and it didn't go so well) and bosses like mad. Want to get a few more cores and things to level my mods before I move onto sedna or phobos.

Suffice to say, god damn am I liking this game. Even farming is fun.

Yeah, so I'm figuring I'll probably be going for a near full set of frames. Saryn, Loki, and Valkyr dont interest me, the rest do.

Bought slots for frames and weapons, and the nekros (in hindsight, probably should have bought a different frame).

I've built (except for nekros) a set of 8 frames already, and I'm working on more.

Rank 30 frames are excalibur, nekros, rhino, volt, and vauban (was a pain to get the parts for vauban, but sooo worth it), frost is rank 25, oberon and nyx are sub rank 10. Got a nova being built, I've got 2 out of 3 parts for a banshee, Ember is ready to be built but i'm holding off for now, and i'm working on getting parts for a mag prime. Haven't started on ash or trinity yet, but i'll get there soon enough. Also built a ton of weapons, and got my third sentinel.

And yeah, this game isnt money grabby at all (unless you need more slots).

I've already easily made the credits to buy any blueprints i need, and the resources come in massive piles from infestation missions. I'm still working on getting enough cores & trash mods to max out my mods, but that's going to take a fair while.

Also got my first forma today, going to drop it on my soma so I can go for that mogamu crit build.

Also, screenies for those still considering the game; because it's fairly pretty.

Also managed to solo my first t2 tower the other day, hopefully should be ready for t3 and derelict soonish.

Yep.

Gone completely nuts for this game now. Something about the whole twitch shooting at high speed and hordes of enemies really works for me. Have 1 of almost every frame (still short 2 I think), almost every system fully unlocked, loads of prime stuff and more mods and resources than I can shake a stick at. Also been smashing the events. just got 1900 on the t2 tethra one.
